Wheatgrass & Broccoli Sprout Juice Science

WHEATGRASS JUICE

Wheatgrass juice has been around for a long, long time including folkloric accounts from the early days of the Persian Empire (the old one) and it is still used as a tonic in Iran and the Middle East today. However, because it is widely available and is not subject to patent laws (a few thousand years too late to file a patent) wheatgrass juice is sort of taken for granted and no one bothers to invest a lot of money in doing scientific testing.

If you Google Wheatgrass Juice you will instantly see millions of hits - then you have to sort out the useful information from the claims of "miracles". But there is a substantial amount of positive truth there.

Less historically, there is the testamentary evidence offered by such as Ann Wigmore and various healers around the world who make wheatgrass juice a central part of the therapies they offer at their clinics and institutions.

BROCCOLI SPROUT JUICE

While there is some historical context, this is a very recent discovery in terms of hard, fact-based science. A university research study found that the young sprouts of broccoli contained a phytochemical called Sulphurophane Glucosinolate (SGS for short) and when broken down by chewing, salivary action and acid in the digestive system the SGS yields specific  isothiocyanates and  these are reported to be hugely beneficial

The University and its associated commercial Company then filed a patent on the growing of broccoli sprouts. They thought they were on to a good thing and if they could lock up and get a monopoly on the production of broccoli sprouts they could corner the market and make a "killing".

Then they sent a letter to all the sprout growers - at least in the USA - saying that they had a patent on growing broccoli sprouts and that no one should grow the sprouts without written permission from them and that the permission would be limited to those growers who signed on to a contract with the Company. They threatened legal action if the warning was ignored.

Some small growers who ignored the warning were dragged into court to defend themsleves - and lost the case and went out of business.

Later, the patent was challenged and eventually a US Judge threw out the patent saying, "You can't patent broccoli sprouts!!"

However, this took a while to happen and during that time many other universities and research centres developed an interest and initiated a whole lot of research.

This brings us to today so that we now see more than 300 articles have been published in peer reviewed scientific journals discussing the benefits of SGS  and isothiocyanates.

However, we are not allowed to point you to those studies and we are certainly not allowed to tell you what they say. The Directives from Brussels are very clear about this:

1. We cannot quote the articles
2. We cannot refer you to the articles
3. We cannot tell you that the juices have any health benefits.
4. What we are allowed to do is make our own study in accordance with the rules and regulations for medical clinical trials of new drugs then publish the results.

But such a trial is virtually impossible to arrange in accordance with those rules and regulations. Then too, costs of clinical trials are often in the range of tens of millions of dollars.

So, if it were possible to design such a clinical trial and if we somehow found all that money we would then be allowed to tell you the results of the clinical trial - about ten years from now.

Only trouble is that after investing tens of millions of euros or pounds or dollars over a ten year period we would have to charge  you what a pharmaceutical company would want for a daily drug dose. Maybe ten or twenty thousand a year?

So, the most we dare to tell you is go Google! and be very careful about what you read.

Please note that at Vegus Foods we are no more nor less than farmers. We are not offering any medical advice. If you want or need medical advice and direction please go and see your professional health care provider . (And while you're there please tell them about our great juices!)

There have been at least 300 published studies made on the benefits of the SGS found in broccoli sprouts.  This is clearly indicative of the interest there is in studying broccoli sprouts and the potential benefits they have to offer.
